AMAL International
A Legacy of Trade. A Future of Seafood Intelligence.
AMAL’s story begins long before the name AMAL existed.
Its foundations lie in a family tradition of commerce stretching back to the early 1900s, built through generations of traders who understood that successful business depended on more than buying and selling.
It depended on knowing the product, knowing the people behind it and protecting one’s word.
Every chapter starts with the one before it
- Early 1900s · The inspiration
Abdul Karim Mohammed
The inspiration. The trading spirit. The moral foundation.
At the beginning of that legacy stood Abdul Karim Mohammed, remembered within the family as a legendary figure in trade and one of the deepest sources of its commercial spirit, discipline and moral foundation.
He built more than businesses. He built a way of doing business.
- Trade with knowledge.
- Protect your reputation.
- Respect the people around the transaction.
- Never compromise the integrity behind your word.
Those principles travelled through the generations that followed.
- The generation that taught Shukoor
Mr. A.K.M. Hussain
The teacher. The operational discipline. The generation from whom Shukoor learned the mechanics of trade.
Mr. Shukoor’s most direct education in business came from his father, Mr. A.K.M. Hussain.
By then, the family’s activities in spices and agricultural commodities had developed into an established commercial operation. The spice and agricultural ventures continued and flourished as the family expanded through succeeding generations.
- Late 1970s and early 1980s · The founder
Mohammed Shukoor Hussain
The founder. The seafood specialist. The man who transformed generations of trading knowledge into AMAL.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, a young Mohammed Shukoor Hussain began working within that world. He did not enter from the top. He learned through the actual work.
Under his father’s guidance, Shukoor worked in supervision and quality assurance, while learning:
PurchasingBookkeepingLabour controlQuality analysisAnd the commercial judgement required to buy physical commodities correctly. And behind those lessons remained the influence of the generation before them, particularly Abdul Karim Mohammed, whose drive toward trade and insistence on strong commercial morals became part of the family’s identity.
But Shukoor was beginning to see another opportunity.
The sea.
- 2015 onwards · The next chapter

The next chapter. Taking the first steps toward value addition, global consumer products and intelligent seafood commerce.
A New Industry
The early 1990s marked Mr. Shukoor’s move into India’s emerging seafood sector.
Just as he had learned spices and agricultural commodities from the source, he approached seafood from the ground up. He studied quality analysis, species, sizes, grades, processing and sourcing.
He began supplying seafood to existing exporters and producers, gradually building relationships with fishermen, processors, factories, traders and buyers.
Networks grew. Knowledge accumulated. And international trade followed.
During this period, Shukoor began his own seafood exports under the name SeaBorn, supplying markets across Europe, Asia and elsewhere. The wider family also began expanding into seafood during this era.
By the middle of the decade, something larger was taking shape.
In 1996, Mr. Shukoor formally began the mission that would become AMAL International. The idea was remarkably straightforward:
Bring the actual source closer to the consumer’s plate.
And build everything between those two points around four principles:
Rather than becoming simply another trader sitting between a seller and a buyer, Shukoor began building something much wider.
A network.
Building AMAL Across India’s Coast
Over the following two decades, AMAL developed sourcing structures across India’s nine coastal states.
The company learned:
- Where products originated.
- When they arrived.
- Which regions produced particular qualities.
- Which factories were strongest at particular processing methods.
- Which specifications suited particular international markets.
- And which people could be trusted to execute them.
AMAL worked across hundreds of seafood varieties, grades and specifications, connecting India’s seafood resources with buyers, ports, cities, markets and brands internationally.
Around the trade grew teams and networks for:
The objective was never merely to locate seafood.
It was to locate the right seafood.
The Next Generation Begins
The next chapter introduces Mr. Aaquib Mohammed Shukoor, son of Mr. Shukoor.
Raised around the seafood trade and trained by people who had spent decades understanding the product, Aaquib inherited access to something difficult to replicate: generational knowledge of the source.
But his own chapter is only beginning.
Vision · work in progressRather than claiming that AMAL has already completed its transformation into a value-added seafood company, the ambition today is much more exciting because it is happening now.
Aaquib has begun taking the first steps into value-added seafood, with an early focus on developing opportunities in the United States.
The idea comes from a simple observation. India possesses extraordinary seafood resources, aquaculture capacity, wild catch diversity, processing infrastructure and skilled labour. Yet enormous quantities still leave the country as relatively basic products or raw material for value addition elsewhere.
Aaquib sees an opportunity for the next generation of Indian seafood. Not simply:
But increasingly:
Designed, processed, value-added and prepared in India for the way the world wants to eat it.The first steps
The United States represents one of the first laboratories for that vision. The work is only beginning.
- Markets are being studied.
- Products are being understood.
- Buyer requirements are being mapped.
- Processing possibilities are being explored.
- And the first channels for higher-value, specialised and plate-ready seafood are starting to take shape.
This is not presented as an achievement already completed. It is AMAL’s next mission.
To discover how far Indian seafood can move beyond being merely a raw-material source and become one of the world’s most versatile sources of:
THE STORY IS NOW BEING WRITTEN.
And now another transformation is beginning alongside it.
Intelligence
For decades, much of AMAL’s competitive advantage existed inside people’s heads. The next AMAL aims to connect that accumulated human knowledge with artificial intelligence, data and intelligent systems.
The story moves from the coast to the world, with intelligence in the middle.
